National Hazing Prevention Week Kicks Off
This week is National Hazing Prevention week, an international effort to educate and inform campus organizations and their members that hazing does not work. Â Marietta College already has a strong stance on hazing, so it hasn’t been a big problem here. Â But elsewhere, many students face daily torture from the organizations they joined, whether they be athletic, greek, or otherwise (although most statistics are about greek hazing, athletic hazing is prevalent, just less reported.
According to the HazingPrevention.Org, 55% of  students involved in clubs or organizations experienced some level of hazing.  40% of athletes reported that their coach knew of hazing happening, with 22% responding that the coach was directly involved.  More frighteningly, nine out of ten students have experienced some sort of hazing, but feel they were not hazed.
This week, Greek Council is sponsoring National Hazing Prevention Week and  National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (although I think most college students are well aware of alcohol…poor choice for a name), with support from Student Activities and Greek Life.  Here is the week’s events:
- Monday, Oct. 19: “Happy Hour” with Bernie McGrenahan, Alma McDonough Auditorium, 8 p.m. Enjoy a comedy and inspirational message about alcohol, hazing and its effects.
- Tuesday, Oct. 20: Participate in saving a life. Blood Drive at The Gathering Place 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Click this link to sign-up to donate blood, save a life: www.givelife.org. Type in mariettac for the sponsor code. Or contact Greek Council President Zohare Khan via email at zhk001 at marietta dot edu.
- Wednesday, Oct. 21: Banners designed by each Greek chapters on hazing prevention.
- Thursday, Oct. 22: Greek Council members will be at a table outside Gilman with pamphlets and information on Hazing Prevention and Alcohol Awareness.
- Friday, Oct. 23: T-shirt Day.

Filling the Gaps
Its been a week and a half/two weeks since I had to send my laptop in for repairs, so here’s all the news you missed!
- Viva La Revolucion! Â Parking for upperclassmen has been restored to the Gathering Place parking lot. Â All blue parking passes can now park in the lot, along with red passes for freshmen that received them.
- Hooray for the Blue and White! Â The Pioneers defeated Thiel College in the River City Bowl with a score of 20-14. Â Looking ahead, Marietta College plays Wilmington College this Saturday at 6 PM, the season’s only home night game.
- Lambda Chi Alpha held their annual Watermelon Bust. Â 13 teams from various organizations competed in events ranging from watermelon tossing to melon carving. Â The teams raised nearly 500 pounds of food, which will go to the Marietta Community Food Pantry as part of the Lambda Chi chapter’s North American Food Drive effort.
- H1N1 “Swine” Flu may have finally made it to Marietta College. Â There have been a couple reported cases of potential H1N1 infections, but they haven’t been confirmed yet as far as I know. Â More information will be posted later.
- Sternwheeler has come and gone. Â The three day event brought thousands of visitors to the city of Marietta for a fun-filled weekend that culminated in one of the region’s most spectacular firework shows. Â I was once again happy to get myself some Quaker Steak and Lube wings and a Bloomin’ Onion from vendors, and won a t-shirt from the Ohio Lottery.
- Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment began yesterday. Â Events continue through Thursday for IFC and Friday for PHC.

Marietta Ranked 19th in Nation
The Etta Express can at least find something positive now that the baseball season is over: being ranked 19th in an end-of-season poll of NCAA Division Three baseball teams.
The Pioneers, who had been ranked as high as 13th in that nation, hadn’t seen the Top 25 since dropping out in week nine. D3baseball.com runs the poll, with a 25-member panel made up of coaches, sports information directors, and media from across the country.
Marietta made a strong run through the Mideast Regional, making it to the regional final against Wooster. Though the Pioneers lost the OAC automatic bid to Heidelberg, they were ranked third in their region after receiving an open bid. Wooster went on to lose in the Championship game to the University of St. Thomas, but finished ranked second in the nation. Heidelberg finished 14th in the nation.

NCAA Division 3 Track And Field Championships Start Today
After a weekend loss for the Pioneers in the Division 3 Baseball Mideast Regional, Marietta College campus staff and volunteers turned to their own Division 3 Championship weekend for success in a different way.
Starting today, Marietta College hosts the NCAA Division 3 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track Championships at Don Drumm Stadium. The event runs through Saturday, the 23rd.
Nearly 700 student athletes, their athletic trainers, coaches, and families from around the nation have descended on Marietta, which is hosting its first major Division 3 Championship since hosting the D3 Baseball Championships from 1976 to 1987 (1976 was the first year that Division 3 Baseball existed).
There are several side events planned to go along with the Championships, including events at Don Drumm and on Front Street. Tonight (Thursday) from 4:30 to 9 PM, restaurants along Front Street will be offering discounts and deals for those wearing Track Championship credentials or wristbands. So fans that buy tickets can also enjoy the same discounts that the student-athletes and coaches get. No list was announced, but a list will be available at the information booths at both Don Drumm and Hermann Fine Arts Center.
On Friday night, a children’s olympics will be held at Don Drumm Stadium from 7 to 9:30 PM. Kids aged 6 to 13 can compete in various olympic events that have been altered to work a bit better for the young ones. The big kicker for the night is a fireworks show around 9:15 PM. The event is being organized by the Marietta College Track & Field Event Management class and is free for the Marietta community, student-athletes, volunteers, coaches, and all others to attend.
For Marietta, the focus is on its two athletes, Jayshon Irvin (Freshman, 100m dash), and Zach Gay (Junior, High Jump). Good luck gentlemen, hopefully you can bring back the hardware. Or I should say, carry it over to the display case in Dyson.

Etta Express Rolls On
The Marietta Pioneers bring a whoopin’ upon Adrian College, with a 14-3 victory.
MC moves on to the second day of games to face Wooster, who beat Concordia (Ill.) 5-1. Â Heidelberg, Concordia (Ill.), and Adrian now face elimination with another loss. Â Heidelberg will play Concordia (Ill.), while Rose-Hulman will play Adrian.
You can listen for the Pioneers from the Online Stream starting at 5 PM Friday. Â Depending on who is eliminated tomorrow, there are several different ways of how Saturday’s games will come together. Â After Friday’s games, I will post when Marietta plays next.

Marietta College D3 Tournament Preview
After falling to Heidelberg in the OAC tournament, Marietta College received an at-large bid for the Division 3 Baseball Tournament. Â This is the 34th time the Pioneers will be in the post-season in baseball.
Playing tonight at #4 Adrian College (Start time of 6:50 PM), the #3 Marietta Pioneers will begin the march into what is hopefully a long post-season. Â While the Pioneers were unranked for most of the season nationally (they did finish with 10 votes, effectively making them the 35th best team in the nation), they finished with a ranking of 4th in the Mideast Region (but seeded third). Â Comparitively, the other OAC team in the tournament (Heidelberg) was ranked #4 in the nation, #1 in the region.
Adrian College was not ranked nationally, but was ranked 6th in the Mideast Region (receiving a #4 seed for the tournament).
The Mideat Region plays in Adrian, Michigan this year, and like the rest of Division 3, features a Double-elimination format.
If Marietta wins tonight’s game, they will play Thursday at 7 PM against the winner of the Wooster/Concordia (Ill.) match-up. Â If MC loses, they play at 3:30 PM tomorrow against the winner of the Heidelberg/Rose-Hulman match-up. Â Past that, the tournament gets much more cloudy. Â But I’ll keep you updated as the tournament progresses.
D3Baseball.com is looking at Heidelberg to advance, but sees Adrian as a possible upset special for the second year in a row. Â Hopefully Marietta can put something together here in the post-season.
All Marietta College games can be heard tonight anywhere in the world thanks to an online stream off of the Marietta Athletics site. Â There would be two streams if school was still in session, but oh well.
