So, we’re doing two Top 10 lists here at Writing on the Mall. Â Here’s the first, which is the Top 10 most read stories of 2009. Â Here’s the list:

#10 – Follow-Up on the Death of Kean Weaver: Kean Weaver was a trustee for the college, who passed away in the Spring of 2009. Â This article was mostly just a link to a story by the Marietta Times.

#9 -UPDATE: MC Student Faces Up To 10 Years for Alleged Stabbing: One of the bigger story lines this Fall was the case of Thomas Robison, who allegedly attempted to rob, then stabbed a Marietta resident. Â He had followed the man from a downtown bar all the way up Pike St. to near where the man lived. Â The man survived, but suffered injuries to his stomach and hand. Â For those looking for an update, the case still hasn’t progressed much since he waived his preliminary hearing in October. Â He faces felony charges with up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

#8 – Marietta College Campus Police Take Heat From Locals: What started out with a series of articles by the Marietta Times led to this article, which strayed off topic severely, and ended up not really going anywhere. Â The Times series had been published as a precursor to Doo Dah Day, in which there are lots of violations and citations handed out. Â Some questioned the need for basically having two police departments in one city. Â The complains never really went anywhere.

#7 – Relay for Life is the 13th: Apparently the Relay For Life team sign-up announcement got a lot of attention. Â Relay went really well this year, even if my coverage was lacking due to falling asleep.

#6 – Marietta College Statement on the Loss of Caleb White: One of the more sad stories of the year. Â Caleb White, a student at Marietta College, passed away after being in a hospital for two weeks. Â He was in a single motorcycle accident on Interstate 77 near Charleston, WV. Â This article included the message sent out by President Jean Scott regarding his loss. Â He will be missed by many.

#5 – Rankings Time: Forbes Ranks Marietta College #112: Forbes, which is one of the many magazines to rank colleges against each other, ranked Marietta #112 in the country. Â That puts Marietta ahead of many other colleges in the area. Â For further analysis, check out the article.

#4 – Blood Drive Today – Give ‘Til It Hurts: The Spring Blood Drive announcement seemed to be very popular with readers, netting the #4 spot on our list. Â We made special note of the fact you received flip flops for giving blood.

#3 – Live Blog: Â Student Senate Townhall Meeting: This meeting was a chance for students to ask candidates about what they would do with Student Senate. Â This was Writing on the Mall’s first big event, and a lot of people started reading the blog because of this article. Â We continued to cover Student Senate throughout the year, including a meeting or two, and its Student Speak-Out in the Fall.

#2 – Book Buying Tips: One of the first articles I wrote for Writing on the Mall, and sometimes still cite, was an article about saving money on textbooks. Â More people are using services away from the college bookstore to save money, which is good. Â Digital textbooks are trying to catch on, but are still expensive and have no resale value.

Writing on the Mall is presenting it’s first annual gift guide for Marietta College students. Â Here are the things that WotM things you should want to bring back to campus for the spring.

Bike with Lock and Helmet

It may sound weird to place such a big-ticket item on a gift list for college students. Â But trust me on this…it will be worth having. Â Marietta is a small town. Â Marietta College is a small college. Â It only makes sense. Â Take your bike on a ride downtown instead of driving. Â heck, if you’re one of the unfortunate students without a car on campus, it makes even more sense. Â The only place I wouldn’t suggest riding to is Wal-Mart, since there are several busy intersections with no crosswalks. Â But other than that, you can go anywhere.

Another place you could ride to is the city’s bike and hike trail. Â it extends all the way from the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers to Indian Acres park. Â The trail is currently being extended, so eventually it will go from Indian Acres to behind Wal-Mart.

For Marietta, I would suggest a mountain bike. Â The streets and sidewalks are not all smooth, plus the fact that terrain varies greatly. Â Having several gears to select from could help with those steeper hills. Â Also, having front and rear brakes will help on bricks, which are notoriously slick.

BMX bikes are not a terrible idea, as there is a new skatepark that welcomes them to be used there. Â However, they may not provide the best ride on long-distance trips.

The lock will come in handy, since you don’t want to lose your bike. Â The important things to look for on bike locks are that it has a combination, and some sort of protective covering on the cable itself. Â There are many options to choose from, so choose based on what you feel meets your needs the best.

Lastly, a helmet is a legal must. Â If you don’t want a ticket, wear a helmet. Â Besides, if you fall, you don’t want to risk serious injury, right?

The Hangover

I don’t think I have to say too much about this one. Â It was one of the best comedies of the year. Â If you own a Blu-Ray player, go ahead and pick it up for that. Â If not, the widescreen DVD will be what you want.

Fast Food Gift Cards

College students love late-night snack runs. Â And while the Gathering Place now offers snacks, better options are off-campus. Â However, those late-night treks can add up quickly. Â This is why college students should ask for gift cards to their favorite off-campus hangouts.

In Marietta and its surrounding areas, you have Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Subway, Burger King, Sonic, and Del Mar’s Mexican Baja. Â $25 to $50 can last someone a whole semester if they use it right (and don’t allow their friends to mooch).

Movie Tickets

There are two Regal Cinema’s near Marietta College. Â And while MC students can get vouchers that allow for matinee rates at any time, pre-paid movie tickets are a nice gift that allows students to see more movies than they normally would. Â They’re not good for movies that have just come out, but after a few weeks, you can see that blockbuster for free.

External Hard Drive

Students could have a computer problem at any moment. Â That’s why external hard drives are great. Â You can use them to back up data, ferry data from one computer to another, or use it as plain storage space. Â While drives come in many shapes, speeds, and sizes, I would suggest Western Digital products. Â I’ve used two of their external drives for several years and never had a problem with either of them.

If you know you’ll be moving a lot of large files, look for a drive with Firewire 400 or 800. Â Try to find a drive that has no external power supply, as these drives are much more mobile than their corded compatriots. Â The larger the drive, the less likely you are to have to buy another hard drive later down the line.

This has probably been one of the hardest things I’ve had to write for this site. Â Not due to the subject matter, but due to the fact that I wanted to word this so that it may drive those who read it to action. Â So please, if you don’t read another article this week, read this one.

Philanthropy is a major part of Marietta College’s beliefs. Â We do Make a Difference Day, Community Service Day, Relay for Life, Up ’til Dawn, and many other individual organization related projects. Â Without Marietta College, this city would find itself with many opportunities for service, but very few people to actually work them.

However, maybe we do too much for national efforts? Â I mean, don’t get me wrong here…I enjoy Up ’til Dawn and Relay for Life…they are great causes. Â However, I feel that now is the time to come together and create something new…something never seen before at Marietta College. Â Something that would create a large-scale philanthropy event for the Spring semester, where we currently only have Community Service Day. Â Something that has been established elsewhere and has proven immensely popular. Â That event is the Dance Marathon.

THON, as it’s better known at Penn State, has been around since the early 70′s, and has since raised over $60 million dollars for the fight against pediatric cancer at a local hospital. Â Money is raised all throughout the Fall and Winter by each of the participating groups. Â Then in mid February, they hold a two day long dance party, celebrating the money they’ve raised and the children that they have helped over the years.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THON 2010′S PROMOTIONAL VIDEO

I’m not suggesting that we try to create an event that massive at Marietta College. Â Not by a longshot. Â Penn State is probably 30 to 40 times larger than us. Â But if we were to take the idea of the dance marathon and have it contribute a local cause, it could be highly successful. Â Have one Dance Marathon Fundraiser for each sport throughout the year, organize one or two cannings (walking around the town with cans asking for donations) a year, have side events to raise money, get organizations both on and off campus to participate, and get companies to support the cause and underwrite costs. Â Then have a 12 hour dance marathon that started at, say, 2 PM on a Saturday afternoon and went until 2 AM at the Gathering Place (or Fenton Court if demand required). Â Have a great DJ play music the entire time, make it fun, interactive, share stories from the charity we choose to support, and have a good time.

It would take a lot of support to get rolling, but if the campus could pull together for this one event and work in harmony, I think we could all do a lot of good for the community.

What do you think? Â Let us know in the Comments section.
