This post is an educational tool for those unfamiliar with the flood plain of Marietta, OH. Currently, there is a FLOOD WATCH for the Marietta area, with projections of river levels reaching Action Stage by the 16th. Watch Writing on the Mall for projection updates as they are posted by the National Weather Service.

So you may be wondering what River Gauge is. It’s the measurement taken at select sites up and down rivers across the country to help better map river levels. There are two gauge sites near Marietta: one at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers on the Harmar side of the Muskingum, and one at the Willow Island Lock just upriver.

These gauge readings can tell us how close we are to flood stage at certain points. At Marietta, as you can see on the image above, we start getting worried around the 33 foot mark, which is labeled an Action Stage. Between 33 and 35 feet, the river threatens to overflow at its lowest points. Action Stage also serves as a way to alert the community that the floodwaters could raise at any point.

Floodwaters between 35 and 38 feet are considered Flood Stage at Marietta. Flooding first hits Don Drumm Stadium, as it is one of the lowest areas in town. It takes 37 feet to affect Fourth Street housing.

Moderate Stage is when flood waters are between 38 and 40 feet. At this stage, most of the West Virginia area along the river is flooded. Flooding could affect the Hermann Bowl and areas along the creek.

When you get above 40 feet, you enter the Major Flood Stage, which is where seven of the ten largest floods in Marietta history have peaked. At 40 feet, a majority of Marietta is flooded, along with Harmar and low-lying areas of Williamstown. The largest flood in Marietta history topped out at over 58 feet. You can still see markers on first street to commemorate the largest floods, with more recent markers showing where the 2004 flood was. The September 2004 flood was nearly 45 feet, while the January 2005 flood was around 44 feet.

The Marietta College Creed may be getting a completely new face next year. A new “Pledge” has been proposed to replace the Creed currently in use. If President Jean Scott approves the changes, the new pledge could be ready for Matriculation this fall.

The proposed changes have been in development for five semesters. A faculty member on the campus life committee showed how a similar pledge at another university helped make them stronger and give them an identity.

Vlad Grecu, a senior and member of the campus life committee, believes that the proposed Pledge could have the same effect on Marietta College students. “More than anything, it gives identification to what a Marietta College student is. It shows what character we want to show through the people in our college.”

The current Creed is lengthy compared to the proposed Pledge (both are included below). The Pledge tries to highlight the most important values desired in Marietta students and the faculty, according to the committee. By being more broad and open, they hope it conveys a “thou-shall” idea in peoples’ minds as opposed to a “thou-shall-not” idea often perceived in the Creed.

Some students wonder if a change is necessary. Ryan Gontero, a freshman, doesn’t think he really knows much about the Creed. “If I knew what the current Creed was, I would have a better time judging if the pledge is better. Either way, the college should publicize it more.”

The Creed is currently not available directly from the Marietta College website. The Nine Core Values, which are different from the Creed, are also getting reviewed for possible revision later this year.

Dr. Robert Pastoor, the new Dean of Students, has worked with the campus life committee since his arrival. He is ready to get student’s reaction to the proposed changes. “The purpose of the pledge is to encourage students to the best that they can be and hold themselves to a higher standard.”

If the Pledge meets to approval of the students and faculty, it will be up to the President to finalize the changes. The current plan is to have incoming freshman sign the Pledge at Matriculation. It hasn’t been determined if current Marietta students will be required to sign to the Pledge or what would happen to students who refused to sign.

If you have thoughts of comments about the proposed changes, you are encouraged to post comments on writingonthemall or talk to one of your student senators.

The Student Creed

The Marietta College Creed is the mechanism designed to implement the standards of conduct, as described throughout this handbook, for the Marietta College student community.

Statement of Principle

The mission of Marietta College “is to provide students with an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to critical analysis, problem solving, and the leadership skills required to translate what is learned into effective action.” Students at Marietta College are both citizens and members of the academic community. As citizens, students enjoy the freedoms of speech, peaceful assembly, and the right to petition. However, as members of the academic community, they are subject to certain obligations which accrue to them by virtue of this membership. The success of an academic community in a residential setting depends upon the willingness of individuals to associate together in such a way that individual freedom and responsible order coexist. As a socially responsible academic community, Marietta College seeks a structure within which individual freedom may flourish without jeopardizing the requirements of an academic community and without becoming so self-centered that the resulting environment damages the very freedom it was intended to support. The College will seek representative input from students affected in changing or initiating any student life policy. This Creed balances the rights and responsibilities of the individual and of others, and of the College. It also recognizes that rights and responsibilities are separate entities, yet one cannot exist without the other. To promote the fullest learning by everyone within the community of this campus, principles that support these goals must be adhered to. The principles outlined in the Creed describe the rights and responsibilities of which each community member must be aware.

Academic Dishonesty

Dishonesty within the academic community is a very serious matter, because dishonesty destroys the basic trust necessary for a healthy educational environment. Academic dishonesty is any treatment or representation of work as if one were fully responsible for it when it is in fact the work of another person. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, theft or improper manipulation of laboratory or research data or theft of services. A substantiated case of academic dishonesty may result in disciplinary action, including a failing grade on the project, or failing grade in the course, or expulsion from the College. In cases of suspected academic dishonesty, the instructor is advised to consult with his or her department chair and, if deemed necessary, with the Provost. If it is determined that academic dishonesty has occurred, it is the responsibility of the instructor to notify the Provost and the Dean of Students of any penalties which have been applied. Those offices will keep a record which may guide action in case of another offense in the future. Students have the right to appeal any penalties imposed for academic dishonesty in accordance with the Academic Grievance procedures described on pages 41-43.

Social Responsibility

A. Preamble

Marietta College recognizes the duality of human beings, as individuals and social beings. In its day-to-day operations it attempts to foster an atmosphere conducive to personal, social, and intellectual growth. It is the belief of the College that growth in these areas is interdependent. Growth is facilitated by personal freedom. As a community, it is the responsibility of the College to promote that freedom. By choosing to become a member of the community the individual accepts the responsibility of ensuring the College is unhindered in its efforts to fulfill its obligation. Central to this individual responsibility is recognition of the personal freedom to which each member of the community is entitled. The objectives of the College are best achieved when energy and resources are not consumed by issues such as discipline. To avoid such difficulties, the College expects its individual members to exercise self-discipline in their associations with others and their activities within the community.

B. Personal Integrity and Self-Respect

The College has as its primary goal the maintenance of an educational community. The actions of individuals, grounded in self-respect and performed with integrity, form the basis for this community. Respect of self is evidenced in actions which protect the integrity of mind and body. Avoidance of morally and physically corrupting actions, including dishonesty and substance abuse, is expected of each member of the community.

C. Respect for the Rights and Concerns of Others

The College believes that among its primary goals are the personal, social, and intellectual growth of members of the community. It is expected that the actions of the students will reflect a personal investment in and commitment to the achievement of these goals. In support of these expectations the College provides education, leadership, and counseling.

D. Respect for the Functioning and the Property of the College

It is expected that all students will conduct themselves in a manner which fulfills the purpose of the College. Unreasonable interference with students, faculty, or staff in the performance of their studies or duties, or the abuse of an individual or College property is unacceptable.

Pioneer Pledge

Honesty

I will always communicate truthfully and respectfully with all members of the Marietta College Community.

Integrity

I will always hold myself to the highest moral and ethical principles both personally and academically.

Responsibility

I will take responsibility for all my decisions, and will challenge others to make decisions that put the community’s best interest at the forefront, while holding them accountable for the decisions that they make.

Respect

I will treat each individual on campus with respect, and learn to appreciate the differences that make each individual and culture within our community unique.

Engagement

I will be active within our community to make a positive difference, and to help serve those who are taking a positive initiative to better the lives of others.

I understand this pledge and agree to abide by its contents and principles and to uphold the standards and values described within. I acknowledge that breaking my word and failing to follow this pledge can lead to possible sanctions though the College judicial process.

More often than not, students crave particular beverages at the most random times, and sometimes there is a mind battle regarding what the mouth is truly mad after.

There are occasional limitations in variety and availability if the observation remains within immediate reach. However, there is a positive alternative to cure even the driest palate. Stoked Coffee, located on 302 Pike St. in Marietta, has been serving up delicious drinks, ranging from the obvious to chai tea, real fruit smoothies, milkshakes referred to as a crème, Italian sodas, sweetened and unsweetened teas, and hot chocolate, as well as bagels, cookies, and scones, since November of 2007.

Co-owned by friends Travis and Angela Christman and Duane and Valerie Huck, Stoked began an as idea between them after they observed that Marietta had no drive-thru gourmet coffee establishment. With the aid of praying nonstop and careful research, the group discovered Crimson Coffee, a supplier and consultant for independent shops, and networked with them to officially start the business. The building used – a quaint, bisque painted brick structure resembling a house – was, according to Valerie Huck, originally a service station in the 1950s, followed by Valley Pool Supply.

“The building was in horrible shape when we took possession on Aug. 1, 2007,” Huck reflects. “The next few months were spent gutting and remodeling the place.”

What Stoked has become is not only a delectable delicacy, but a welcoming workplace and relaxing hangout, equipped with tables and chairs and free wi-fi for its customers, not to mention occasional live music from students within the area. Its staff that consists of ten part-time employees includes high school and college students, the owner couples, and middle-aged women who have been eager to work after raising their children. Some have experience in the restaurant or retail industry, while some simply just have a love for coffee.

“We look for those who are friendly, pay close attention to detail, and who are teachable,” Huck adds.

With a small, yet diverse group, it is no surprise that the shop attracts both men and women of all ages and from different economic backgrounds.

“We find that our customers are coming to Stoked Coffee intentionally,” Huck addresses, “not just because they were traveling and happened to stop.”

Cheska Van Gundy, a junior at Marietta College, did just that.

“I discovered Stoked on my own accord,” she recalls. “I saw that it had opened and had been excited about it since I heard a coffee shop was going to open there. I’m kind of a coffee fanatic, so I was looking forward to it for awhile. Now I’d say I average about one trip a week throughout the entire year, but during stressful school times, such as the last few weeks of the semester or midterms, I might go to Stoked multiple times a week.”

While Van Gundy may be hooked to Stoked, its business still lacks this demographic that it aims to attract.

“More students from Washington State Community College come than Marietta College,” Huck admits. “We think this is because those students are driving to school and can easily come over to our shop; we are a little farther than most Marietta College students probably prefer to walk.”

This is not meant to discourage students from adventuring and taste testing, however.

“We would like to grow our business more through college students,” Huck says. “We think our shop is a great place for students to study by themselves or in groups or just hang out, and we’d like to become the business of their choice if they need pick-me-up beverages or just a treat.”

The shop’s most popular and signature drink is the Stoked Mocha, which includes espresso, milk of choice, white chocolate, caramel drizzle, and whipped cream, while its gourmet cinnamon and cranberry orange scones prove to be the goodies that sell out most frequently.

So what makes Stoked different than other coffee shops in town?

“Because we are locally owned, we don’t have a name that is recognizable to the general public, but it sounds right,” Huck assures. “One of the owners likes to say, ‘I’m stoked’ when he is excited about something. We brought up the idea of Stoked Coffee and were all excited about it; now we use the slogan, ‘Get Stoked.’”

There is more than just a catchy, enthusiastic name, though.

“We feel like we have superior product, especially to our drive-thru competition, because our drinks can be customized to everyone’s liking, such as an extra shot of or half the espresso, changing syrup and foam amounts, having drinks hot, cold, or frozen/blended with temperature adjustments, skim and soy milk, sugar free, and decaf” Huck says. “Also, several places in town offer prepackaged mix types of coffee drinks, but ours are made with fresh ingredients, and our coffee beans are from the top 5 percent in the world. You can tell a difference in the taste – our coffee doesn’t taste burnt or bitter.”

And customers certainly boast about Stoked!

“I like that Stoked isn’t a huge chain,” Van Gundy says. “I do love Starbucks, but I prefer to support local businesses whenever possible. It’s definitely family based and also takes an active role in the community. They know me when I go in and they’re always very accommodating.”

Huck also ensures, “Customers love our product. We have customers who come in two and three times a day. We have customers who have thanked us for opening a ‘true’ gourmet coffee shop in Marietta. A few have even told us that they haven’t had authentic espresso like ours since they traveled in Italy!”

The praise has triggered Stoked’s staff to set its expectations even higher.

“Beyond expanding our customer base in the Marietta area, we’d eventually like to open locations in other cities,” Huck says. “We hope that as positive word of mouth spreads about our product, and we are intentional about marketing and advertising, that we will be able to reach our sales goals. We would also like to explore catering and include lunch items, but we currently aren’t licensed by the health department to prepare them.”

Van Gundy mentions, “I’ve never had a bad experience at Stoked; I love the environment there; it’s very laidback, comfortable, and clean. I don’t think anyone’s truly lived their live tastefully without trying Stoked!”

Stoked’s hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Its staff highly encourages students to visit and try their variety of beverages and pastries, especially since they get a 10 percent discount.

(Ed. Note – This is an opinion piece. The contents of the article are the thoughts and opinions of the author alone, and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Writing on the Mall or its staff)

For many students on campus, this team is almost like a secret society, except to the participants’ close friends, and this needs to change immediately. The Marietta College community of students and staff need to stand up and support these bold and lively students.

As a junior here at Marietta, I have only heard of this so-called forensics team of ours a couple of times and those were freshman year when my Communications 101 professor would make an announcement or congratulate them aloud. If you want to know more, you’ve got to talk to the right people. Once you find them and start talking though, it’s hard to stop because the passion for communications runs deep here at MC.

The Marietta College Forensics team is an organization that is dedicated to helping individuals on campus try to perfect the skill of public speaking. From their website connecting to the college’s, you can find out most of the technicalities of the organization and what they are mainly about. According to the department page for forensics, the Greeks organized contests for speakers that developed and recognized the abilities believed to have been central to democracy. I wonder how the Greeks would have felt about the Bush family’s speaking abilities.

In order to better understand what the organization is all about, it’s good to delve into what they go through in practices and competitions. First off, there are three separate categories of events; interpretation, prepared, and limit preparation. Starting in the fall, before semester even begins the seasoned team members start by researching possible topics and possible selections to start writing. New member meetings are held once the semester starts and then the team can choose which tournaments will fit their schedules.

Pieces are prepared as much as possible in the first month of school so the rest of the year can be dedicated to practice making perfect and taking the criticism from judges and making the performances stronger for the next tournament. The meetings are weekly and open to new members at any point as far as I could tell from talking to a few members and Tomeka Robinson, Communications professor and co-leader of the organization. The team usually stays the same year round because students are encouraged to try out early to get in the most tournaments possible but, no matter what your major is, you can be a forensics pro if you’d like.

Scott Burnham, current president of the team states, “I feel that more advertisement would definitely help students learn about the organization. I also feel that students need to realize that the opportunities this organization presents are limitless. This club allows students to practice a practical skill that is a necessity in a professional career. This club also promotes friendships across Universities and on our own campus.”

When asking students what their best team experience is, you might expect to hear things like hitting a homerun in the ninth and scoring that final goal that broke the tie but, on this team, the high moments are much deeper than you can expect from any other team on campus.

“[Winning the National Novice Championship freshman year] showed me that even though I attended a small college, I could still compete against universities that have enormous programs and that dedication is truly the key to your success.” Dedication huh, I think Marietta College knows a little something about that.

To a college with 175 years of history this year, stand up and be proud of the amazing public speakers that are right here in your own body of students. This organization is student-led, the most successful academic organization on campus, and it focuses on helping students reach their highest capacity that they possibly didn’t even know existed! Marietta College plays host to the annual Wilcox tournament so next year, take the chance to see you peers in action. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll make you think a little harder the next time you open your trap.

It’s Tuesday night. Maybe you’re working on homework and need a little background music. Maybe you’re avoiding homework and need a distraction. Your iTunes playlist is overplayed and Pandora can’t seem to get your musical style just right. So what do you do? Perhaps turning to the good old radio is the way to go.

Senior Danette Curiale, of Cleveland, Ohio, and junior Alissa Bambarger, of Conneaut, Ohio, recently started broadcasting their own hip-hop radio show on Marietta College’s own WCMO 98.5 FM. The duo’s show, Hip Hop Hour to the Second Power, runs from 7-9 p.m. every Tuesday.

“We both like hip-hop a lot,” Curiale said, “We pick songs that are popular and that we like.” They are happy to take requests, both girls said, and they will play any suggestions they get, as long as they fit into the show’s genre.

Bambarger, who goes by “A-Bam” on the show, said her favorite aspect of doing the show is getting to play the kind of music she likes because there aren’t really stations around here that play it. “I never thought I’d have a radio show,” Curiale, better known as “D-Money,” said, “It’s different. That’s what I like.” Neither thinks having a show is very hard, the most difficult thing for both is finding edited versions of the songs they want to play. During the course of the show, they also have to break for campus and community announcements, as well as play public service announcements.

Curiale and Bambarger heard about an opening for a show through their sorority sister, Amy Hayes, who has had a show for the past two years. “We just had to e-mail the station manager and fill out some paperwork with a basic idea and timeslot. It was really simple,” Curiale commented. Now they grace the airwaves for your enjoyment on those boring Tuesday nights, so take a break and tune in.
