Writing on the Mall's Top 10 Most Read Stories of 2009
So, we’re doing two Top 10 lists here at Writing on the Mall. Â Here’s the first, which is the Top 10 most read stories of 2009. Â Here’s the list:
#10 – Follow-Up on the Death of Kean Weaver: Kean Weaver was a trustee for the college, who passed away in the Spring of 2009. Â This article was mostly just a link to a story by the Marietta Times.
#9 -UPDATE: MC Student Faces Up To 10 Years for Alleged Stabbing: One of the bigger story lines this Fall was the case of Thomas Robison, who allegedly attempted to rob, then stabbed a Marietta resident. Â He had followed the man from a downtown bar all the way up Pike St. to near where the man lived. Â The man survived, but suffered injuries to his stomach and hand. Â For those looking for an update, the case still hasn’t progressed much since he waived his preliminary hearing in October. Â He faces felony charges with up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
#8 – Marietta College Campus Police Take Heat From Locals: What started out with a series of articles by the Marietta Times led to this article, which strayed off topic severely, and ended up not really going anywhere. Â The Times series had been published as a precursor to Doo Dah Day, in which there are lots of violations and citations handed out. Â Some questioned the need for basically having two police departments in one city. Â The complains never really went anywhere.

Aggravated Burglary Triggers Campus Notification
If there is one thing that the College does well, its timely notification. Â The e-mail/robo-calls went out at 10 AM, 4 hours after the incident happened.
In compliance with the Timely Notice provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, Marietta College officials want to inform you that Marietta College police are investigating an aggravated burglary that took place at approximately 6 a.m., Friday, May 8.
An unknown person entered a resident’s room at Parsons Hall. After the suspect gained entry he attempted to restrain the resident. The resident fought back and was able to separate from the attacker, who fled on foot. Campus Police say nothing at this time indicates the attacker had any connection to the Marietta College Campus.
The male, described as tall, 6-foot-0 to 6-foot-2, slender build was wearing a dark or black hoodie type sweatshirt and dark jeans. The suspect was wearing dark eyeliner and had multiple piercings on his face.
The scene has been processed by an evidence technician from the Marietta City Police Department. The case is being investigated by the Marietta College Police and the Marietta City Police.
If anyone has any details please contact Marietta College Police at (740) 376-4611.
Once again, questions are raised about the security of Parson’s Hall. Â The first floor is completely unprotected from outsiders. Â Without knowing what floor it was, it would be my guess that it was the first floor. Â I doubt somebody would let some guy follow them through the door to gain access to the second/third/fourth floors.
And a note…Comparatively, our crime rate is much much lower than most colleges/universities. Â It’s just that these incidents raise questions of the security of students.

Marietta College Campus Police Takes Heat From Locals
Apparently, the Marietta Times has been really busy writing about the college the past couple days. Â And me being busy all weekend prevented me from reporting on it. Â Until now.
The Times did a special expose on the Marietta College Campus Police, or CPS as they’re known by on campus.  Now yes, the college has a full-fledged police department.  They have arrest powers, and are allowed to use tasers, tear-gas, pepper spray, and other non-lethal methods to take down people with.  They can investigate crimes and hand off cases to the Marietta Municipal Court for processing and such.  And yes, they can request aid from Marietta Police and Fire/EMS if needed.
The 6 member force operates its own radio frequencies, two police cars with sirens and light arrays, and one golf cart.
But is it too much, or too little?
Today starts a series of posts regarding the quality of our CPS. Â I start today dealing with what exactly the Creed is, the Judicial Process the college uses, and possible fines and other consequences. Â Tomorrow will focus on the Time’s comparison of Campus Police/Security at various colleges, and Wednesday will focus on whether CPS should be armed with guns/live ammo.
