The Power of a Wish

Pie a ChiEd’s Note:  Chelsey Scott will be writing for Writing on the Mall, please give her a warm welcome.  For full disclosure, Scott is a Chi Omega.  Also, apologies for the delay in getting this article out.  Things will be much more on time now, I promise.

If you had lunch or dinner in Gilman on Wednesday, September 1, you may have noticed lots of pies outside. And not the kind of pie you eat – the kind of pie you throw. At Chi Omegas, to be specific. This year’s first on-campus fundraiser was held by the women of Chi Omega in their annual Pie-A-Chi charity event, proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, their national philanthropy. After taking last year off from the event, Pie-A-Chi was brought back by popular demand this fall. And when I say popular, I mean popular. The event raised more money than it has in the last five years with a grand total of over $600! Not bad for four hours and thirteen tubs of whipped cream huh?

Pie A ChiFor those who may have missed the event, students who wished to pie one of the women paid either $3 for a throw or $5 for a smash in the face. Not only were the Chi Omegas the targets, special guest appearances were made by Delta Tau Delta’s Derek Ensinger, Alpha Tau Omega’s Drew Schulte, Sigma Kappa’s Amber Davis, (then) Rho Gammas Alex Edelbrock and Kasey Woodworth, and student body President, Josh Maxwell. The women of Chi Omega want to send a million thanks to these individuals for being such great sports to raise money for this fantastic cause! And another thanks to all the people who paid to pie a Chi – you helped share the power of a wish, the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation raises money to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. For more information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit

Rock-A-Day: Rush Edition

Interfraternity Council painted the rock this week to make the campus aware that it was Rush Week.  What looked better…the Rock, or the masterful use of Word when making the event poster this year?  Rush week continues tonight with events from Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, and Delta Tau Delta.  You can find the full schedule on the Writing on the Mall calendar.

Things to Keep You Busy This Weekend

  • At 8 PM tonight and Saturday, 2 PM on Sunday, the Theater at Marietta College presents its Studio Series.  Performances include “Overtones“, “The Author’s Voice“, and “The Appointment“, which are all directed and acted out by Marietta College students.
  • 9 PM tonight at the Gathering Place, Roy Wood will be hamming it up as part of Club 21 and Friday Night Fever.
  • Saturday night at 10 PM is the Delta Tau Delta Toga Party.  Yes, there’s a Facebook group for that.
  • Sunday at 2 PM in the Gathering Place there will be Jazz.  I don’t know much more than that.

Super Bowl Party Time

I hate the Steelers (yes, I am a Browns fan, get over it).

But, I can’t wait to go watch the Cardinals whoop on the Steelers (hopefully) tonight.  And I’ll be doing it with all the other people heading over to the Gathering Place tonight.

IFC and CUB are co-sponsoring a Super Bowl Party at the G-Spot starting at 6 PM.  We’ll have about 300 wings there, along with tons of pizza, and of course, unlimited drinks of the non-alcoholic type.  The game will be on all the TV’s (including the giant screen), and all of the usual G-Spot activities will be available for use (including pool, foosball, and the new arcade machines that they installed).  The fraternities will be bringing their cornhole boards and will have tables set up to inform male students about the positives of fraternal life at Marietta College.  CUB will be bringing prizes to raffle off (mostly Steelers stuff, but I’m sure that most people in the area won’t mind that).

So, 6 PM tonight at the Gathering Place…be there or be square!
