Marietta Riverfront Roar Preview

If you’re looking for some fun this summer, check out the annual Riverfront Roar in Marietta. Think Sternwheeler Festival, but with high-octane racing boats racing on the Ohio River.

Plenty of bands and local talent will be performing throughout the weekend, and there should be plenty of concession shops open with various food option to tantalize your taste buds.

The Riverfront Roar will be back in Marietta July 10th through 12th, and promises to bring more excitement than before as it will host the F2 and F3 championships for the first time. In fact, Marietta won the league’s favorite site award from the teams and sponsors.

Super Bowl Party Time

I hate the Steelers (yes, I am a Browns fan, get over it).

But, I can’t wait to go watch the Cardinals whoop on the Steelers (hopefully) tonight.  And I’ll be doing it with all the other people heading over to the Gathering Place tonight.

IFC and CUB are co-sponsoring a Super Bowl Party at the G-Spot starting at 6 PM.  We’ll have about 300 wings there, along with tons of pizza, and of course, unlimited drinks of the non-alcoholic type.  The game will be on all the TV’s (including the giant screen), and all of the usual G-Spot activities will be available for use (including pool, foosball, and the new arcade machines that they installed).  The fraternities will be bringing their cornhole boards and will have tables set up to inform male students about the positives of fraternal life at Marietta College.  CUB will be bringing prizes to raffle off (mostly Steelers stuff, but I’m sure that most people in the area won’t mind that).

So, 6 PM tonight at the Gathering Place…be there or be square!

Student Discounts Abound Around Campus

As we get to the end of the semester, money is tighter than usual.  Here’s a list of all the discounts that Marietta College students can take advantage of around the area.  For more discounts, check out The Marcolian print version…usually some pretty nice coupons in there also.

Great Wall of Marietta is Disappearing

As the Double L (Legacy Library, not the bar) project begins finishing up, crews began to take down the fencing around the perimeter of the site.  More importantly, the ugly ugly ugly blue tarp around the site has finally disappeared for the most part.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I wouldn’t have wanted to look at the construction site the whole time either.  But that covering just got unbearable after a while.  It began ripping and tearing and looked downright nasty for what is typically a pristine campus.

Luckily, the eyesore is gone, and now we can see the work going on in and around the site.  The seating for the Amphitheater is now completed, and only needs some concrete poured for the stage before being completed.  It looks like they are constructing a raised patio area over by the Gilman mail room doors, possibly for picnic tables or benches?  Only one could hope.  There is another structure, primarily of brick, being built on the side by the DBRC.  No clue what it will end up being, as only time will tell.

Paths have been graded and graveled in preperation for concrete.  Looks like there will be an oval path that connects all four features of the pseudo-green space together and ties them into the staircases and secondary paths required by the massive amount of dirt that was generated from putting the Library above the flood plane.

One final note…according to what I’m hearing the food services available inside the library will be typical coffee shop fare.  The Seattle’s Best Coffee Shop will serve up coffee and specialty drinks, along with soups, salads, sandwhiches, and deserts.  No word on whether the services will be offered 24 hours a day, nor if this will be included on the meal plan/declining balance only/cash only.  Only time will tell.

Everything still looks like a go for books to be moved back in over break and for the Library to be open for student use by the first day of classes next semester.
