SAAC Wraps Up Pop Tab Collection With Final Weigh-In Friday

DSCF1088The Marietta College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will conclude its pop tab collection drive with a final weigh-in ceremony Friday, April 9 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Kremer Amphitheater, located in the center of campus. The collection drive, which has accumulated 42 pounds of aluminum pop tabs, will donate its final amount to the Ronald McDonald House Charities along with the other nine schools in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

For SAAC, an organization comprised of student-athletes, athletic trainers, dancers, and cheerleaders, the collection drive has provided another source of competition as each team is trying to collect the most pop-tabs. In fact, the local McDonald’s restaurants have agreed to donate one free large sandwich to each member of the winning team to provide some incentive.

And it doesn’t stop there. As stated earlier, this collection drive is also part of a larger, conference-wide collection competition as each school in the Ohio Athletic Conference is also vying to be the top pop-tab collector. The winner will be named

April 11 at the next all-OAC SAAC meeting. The school with the most pop tabs will receive a trophy to keep until next year’s competition.

For those interested in making their own pop tab donation, the main drop-off location is Wendy Thieman’s office in the Athletic Department located in the Dyson-Baudo Recreation Center on Marietta College’s campus. The weather location for this event is the Upper Gilman area of the Gilman Center, directly adjacent to Kremer Amphitheater.

Gilman Note

All campus food services will not be open for dinner tonight.  Instead, the campus is sponsoring an all-campus BBQ for all students in the Kremer Amphitheater from 5 PM to 8 PM.  Enjoy food and fun outside of the Legacy Library as you reconnect with old friends and prep for the first day of classes.

Concert Series Begins On Campus

Apparently the college has decided to hold a concert series in the newly-christened Kremer Amphitheater this summer.  Here’s the scoop directly from college.

June 29, 2009 — Marietta College kicks off the Kremer Amphitheatre Concert Series on Wednesday with a two-hour concert by the talented rhythm and blues artist Dav “Fathead” Davis.

“We invite the students, staff, faculty, their families and the Marietta community to this free outdoor concert in our new amphitheatre,” said David Travis, Director of Student Activities & Greek Life at Marietta College. “We had Dav ’Fathead’ Davis perform for our Coffee House Series during the academic year and he was probably the best musician I’ve heard in years.”

The Offices of Residence Life and Student Activities & Greek Life sponsor the Kremer Amphitheatre Concert Series.

Davis, who sings and plays the electric piano, will be accompanied by his band. The seasoned performer has been entertaining for more than three decades.

The concert will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kremer Amphitheatre, which is located outside of the new Legacy Library. Travis said guests can bring blankets on which to sit and free sodas will be available to concert goers.
The second installment of the series features a performance by the Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Enchanted. That concert is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 29.

“We hope to draw enough of a crowd to these two concerts so we can expand the series next year to four performances,” Travis said.

Enchanted entertains throughout Ohio by playing a wide range of bands and singers from Evanescence to The Doobie Brothers and Pink to Journey. They are most known for their Fleetwood Mac tributes.

“Enchanted is also a very talented group of musicians and they really capture the sound of Fleetwood Mac,” Travis said.

In case of inclement weather for either performance, the concert venue will be changed to the Gathering Place, which is located on Marietta College’s campus at the corner of Butler and Seventh streets.

It looks interesting, but it remains to be seen if the community will come, since the student body isn’t really around right now.  But a good idea none-the-less.  I’d like to see more things like this in the early Fall and late Spring.
