DU Field Down For Count This Fall

DSCF1104Students, Faculty, and Staff received an e-mail this morning reminding them that DU Field will be out of commission until Spring Semester.  Crews are working to renovate the field, including work to level the area and remove ruts that have developed over time.

The closure of DU Field means that Flag Football games will have to be moved.  Our guess is that almost all games will be played near Don Drumm Stadium this year, but there is a chance that Parsons Field could also be used.  Parsons Field is being listed as the alternate for those looking to enjoy wide-open flat spaces on campus.  Another alternative would be to use the Kremer Green in front of the Legacy Library.  While smaller, the area is well suited to just laying out or playing cornhole (oops, I mean Corn Toss, lol).

Chalking on the Mall: 4:20 Supporters Protest for Legalized Marijuana

April 20th is known as a counter-culture holiday to support use of the drug Marijuana, which led students to chalk the mall last night in support of legalization.

However, what students may have forgotten was the College’s chalk policies, which state the following:

Chalking on campus is limited to flat ground where rain can wash the chalk away and not on building or under awnings. Chalk must be non-toxic sidewalk chalk. Paint is not acceptable and will result in fines and damage charges being assessed to the individual or group.

While much of the chalk on the mall will remain, since it is in open areas, many chalk markings have or will be removed by Physical Plant.  Below are photos of the chalk markings, the rock, and other messages written on and around the Mall.  Clicking on photos will tell you where it was located, and whether the chalk was legal or illegal.

Gilman Note

All campus food services will not be open for dinner tonight.  Instead, the campus is sponsoring an all-campus BBQ for all students in the Kremer Amphitheater from 5 PM to 8 PM.  Enjoy food and fun outside of the Legacy Library as you reconnect with old friends and prep for the first day of classes.

The Moose Lodge is No More

Some of you may have heard last Spring that the College had purchased the Moose Lodge.  Immediately the possibilities spun in everybody’s head as to what the college may be doing with the building.  Would it be a new Gathering Place?  Be used for the art department?  Be torn down and used for a new dorm?  A new dining hall?

Well, as it turns out, none of that.  The Physician’s Assistant program had the building gutted and re-configured in what was the least known about campus construction.  While crews raced to finish the Legacy Library and the Planetarium, demolition and construction began within the Moose Lodge.

The new building allows the college to expand the program and allow more students.  30 students were accepted this fall, and 36 more will be admitted to the program next fall.  The program started in 2002 with 15 students, and could only accept 22 students at most.

For more information about the Moose Lodge and its new use, check out the article at the Marietta Times.

Concert Series Begins On Campus

Apparently the college has decided to hold a concert series in the newly-christened Kremer Amphitheater this summer.  Here’s the scoop directly from college.

June 29, 2009 — Marietta College kicks off the Kremer Amphitheatre Concert Series on Wednesday with a two-hour concert by the talented rhythm and blues artist Dav “Fathead” Davis.

“We invite the students, staff, faculty, their families and the Marietta community to this free outdoor concert in our new amphitheatre,” said David Travis, Director of Student Activities & Greek Life at Marietta College. “We had Dav ’Fathead’ Davis perform for our Coffee House Series during the academic year and he was probably the best musician I’ve heard in years.”

The Offices of Residence Life and Student Activities & Greek Life sponsor the Kremer Amphitheatre Concert Series.

Davis, who sings and plays the electric piano, will be accompanied by his band. The seasoned performer has been entertaining for more than three decades.

The concert will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kremer Amphitheatre, which is located outside of the new Legacy Library. Travis said guests can bring blankets on which to sit and free sodas will be available to concert goers.
The second installment of the series features a performance by the Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Enchanted. That concert is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 29.

“We hope to draw enough of a crowd to these two concerts so we can expand the series next year to four performances,” Travis said.

Enchanted entertains throughout Ohio by playing a wide range of bands and singers from Evanescence to The Doobie Brothers and Pink to Journey. They are most known for their Fleetwood Mac tributes.

“Enchanted is also a very talented group of musicians and they really capture the sound of Fleetwood Mac,” Travis said.

In case of inclement weather for either performance, the concert venue will be changed to the Gathering Place, which is located on Marietta College’s campus at the corner of Butler and Seventh streets.

It looks interesting, but it remains to be seen if the community will come, since the student body isn’t really around right now.  But a good idea none-the-less.  I’d like to see more things like this in the early Fall and late Spring.

April Fool's Hits Marcolian…A Day Late

The writers for the Marcolian decided to have some April Fool’s Day fun for this week’s edition.  The paper copy came out on Thursday.

Subjects of the pranks are the new Planetarium and the protected structure by Dyson-Baudo Rec Center.

In the first story, the Planterarium will be torn down, as it’s been a “Complete utter mistake.”

The second story says that students are stuck waiting for a Marietta College bus that will never arrive.

They’re alright reads.  Better than the college PR that currently fills the Marcolian (for the most part) now.

Chlapaty Cafe, Still Un-pronounceable, Very Tasty

While I continue to fight with the school’s network and attempt to up-load photos of the Double-L  to the Flikr stream, here’s an update on Chlapaty Cafe.

Welcome Back Update!

Welcome back to Marietta College, everybody. Should be a fun Spring semester from the sounds of things so far.

Just have a few quick updates…

For those of you looking for your breakfast fix at Gilman Express, nevermore. Or at least for now.

Signs posted at Gilman Express noted a new opening time of 10:30 AM. Students were encouraged to go to Chlapaty Cafe (asked more students, nobody is sure how to pronounce it still…great). So it looks like your breakfast options are Chlapaty Cafe or Gilman.   Chlapaty Cafe is using the Meal Exchange program, so users of the meal plan can go there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also, word to the wise…Chlapaty Cafe is supposedly Declining Balance only. If true, might be an early blow to students looking to enjoy the Cafe but are on 19 meal a week plans (which only include $35 in Declining Balance. I will try to check it out later today.

Maybe Chartwells is trying to encourage students to pay the extra $85 for the Unlimited Gilman plan, which allows students to visit Gilman as many times as they ever care to during a semester, and gives them $300 in Declining Balance Points for all other locations.

Havn’t confirmed it yet, but from the sounds of it, Gilman Express will only be open from 10:30 AM to 1 PM. But we’ll see once Chartwell’s updates its times.

Legacy Library Week Kicks Off Spring Semester

Finally…details.  Very helpful details.

The new library will kick off the new year with a week of events to help show off all of its new features and facilities.  Events are going to include another Book Brigade, library tours, a training day, an introduction to Chlapaty Café (Really?  Really?  How do you even pronounce that?), and a game night to show off the new multipurpose space.
