Fake Senior Week Flyer Prompts Student Senate Response

Now, I’ll be honest.  I was going for the win today with the Marcolian Purchases Writing on the Mall story line that played out today (it was a joint April Fool’s day joke…the Facebook and Twitter feeds posted articles from the Marcolian, and the website bounced you directly to the Marcolian website.  I hope you guys enjoyed it.  Special thanks to Alison Matas and the Marcolian for letting me play the prank.  I hope their page visits shot through the roof), but there may be somebody that beat me today :-(.

Enter the Fake Senior Week Event List (click for full size).

I added the watermark on there since I’m publishing it.  This is NOT something we put out, don’t worry.

However, the flyer did cause enough commotion to require an e-mail from Student Senate President Kyle Thauvette:

Students, Faculty, and Staff:

There have been a few concerns regarding a Senior Week flyer that
contains misleading information. The flyer in question has a clipart
picture of a graduation cap and lists events for senior week that
include  Hobo Train Ride, and Degree Auction. While the date for the
start of Senior Week, as well as the web address to register for the
events is correct, this was not a publication distributed, or approved
by Student Senate. Senior week in an opportunity for graduating seniors
to enjoy their last days at Marietta College and make more memories with
their classmates. Student Senate encourages all seniors to register for
senior week. If you happen to come across any of these false flyers,
please disregard them. Thank you for your time, and enjoy the weekend!

Kyle Thauvette
Student Senate President

Of Course, the actual list of senior week events is much less controversial, or at least from the college’s perspective.  You can find the whole list of actual 2010 Senior Week events, and how to register, at the Student Senate website.

UPDATE: Robison Waives Hearing, Awaits Grand Jury Indictment

MC Student Thomas Robison waived his right to a hearing yesterday according to the Marietta Times, which means his case can now be presented to a Grand Jury.  The Grand Jury can add more charges to the indictment if they deem it necessary, which means an additional charge of felonious assault could added.  Felonious assault can add up to eight years to his list of charges, which include up to ten years for robbery and 33 days for probation violation.

Reportedly, the man he allegedly stabbed is out of the hospital.  There is no date set yet for the Grand Jury Indictment.

Keep an eye out for next week’s Marcolian, which I am being told features interviews of Robison, his lawyer, the man he allegedly stabbed, and other students.  Hard hitting journalism from the Marcolian?  You heard it here first.

Marcolian Round-Up!

A new school year brings us a new Marcolian…or at least in paper form.  The Marc website has not been updated to reflect the new stories.

If you’re looking for another helpful student media, the Marcolian is less of a newsy paper (usually runs every other week, but that may be changing) and more of a magazine.  They cover big campus events, but tell more of the story than just telling you what happened.  There are more editorials and opportunities for students to speak their mind and get their point across.

Headlines in this week’s Marcolian:

  • Matriculation Ceremony takes place tonight
  • Marietta College ranked 112th in Nation
  • MC Students travel to Central America
  • Planetarium community events scheduled for August, September
  • Soccer coach expects greatness
  • Football team prepares for season of growth
  • Local Churches
  • Student Discounts
  • Fine Arts on Campus
  • President welcomes Class of 2013
  • Senior gives prospective on summer
  • Del Mar’s Baja Grill disappoints
  • Freshman offers fresh perspective
  • Campus Organizations
  • Cable Channel Guide

Writing on the Mall will be posting a few more guides now based off of a few of the Marc articles (Church Guide, Campus Organization Guide), but already has guides featuring the Cable Channel Listing (which was updated today to include digital channels for those with Digital Tuners), Area Concert Guide, and more.

And as a side note, Del Mar’s is really tasty (in my opinion) so I disagree with the Op/Ed saying that it lacks flavor and experience.  They just opened, they’re still training and hiring.  Cut them some slack.  And I think its tasty and flavorful.  But make your own opinion.

Pick up a copy of the Marcolian today to read all of the articles they have this week.

April Fool's Hits Marcolian…A Day Late

The writers for the Marcolian decided to have some April Fool’s Day fun for this week’s edition.  The paper copy came out on Thursday.

Subjects of the pranks are the new Planetarium and the protected structure by Dyson-Baudo Rec Center.

In the first story, the Planterarium will be torn down, as it’s been a “Complete utter mistake.”

The second story says that students are stuck waiting for a Marietta College bus that will never arrive.

They’re alright reads.  Better than the college PR that currently fills the Marcolian (for the most part) now.
