Looking Back: 2004 and 2005 Floods Changed College Preparedness
It was Friday Sept. 17, 2004. Remnants of Hurricane Ivan had just come through dropping almost five inches of rain over the Mid-Ohio Valley during the day. The Ohio River and its tributaries were already swollen due to three and a half inches of rain from the week before, when remnants of Hurricane Frances came through.
Early that Friday morning the National Weather Service in Charleston predicted that the Ohio River at Marietta would crest just above flood stage. Then later that afternoon, the National Weather Service called off the flood warning and said that the Ohio River at Marietta would crest more than a foot below flood stage.

Quick Hits
- Club MC Pictures are up on our Facebook Page. Â They will eventually reach Flickr (Once I find a spot that will allow me to upload to Flickr, since the college won’t allow me to. Â For some reason they have a content filter on uploading pictures to Flickr. Â Who knew?) Â So go check those out. Â There is a photo of every booth.
- Apparently parking for upperclassmen has been greatly reduced on campus. Â The story goes that all of the parking in front of the Gathering Place has been converted from mixed parking (Freshmen and Upperclassmen) to Freshmen only. Â While I haven’t investigated it too much, there is a Facebook group asking students to e-mail the administrators at the school to fix the problem. Â I’ll try to get some more info on the situation.
- The Charles Sumner Harrison Organization Icebreaker is tonight at the Gathering Place at 10 PM. Â Go enjoy the music, fun, food and drinks. Â The event is a Blacklight Party, so dress for the occasion.
- Blessid Union of Souls is tomorrow night at the Gathering Place. Â Everything starts at 8 PM, so get there early for the best seats.
- Today is Pioneer Pride Day! Make sure to wear your favorite Marietta College shirt today, and take a photo of yourself wearing it. Â Then send it to Tom Perry at College Relations to be included in the Pioneer Pride photo gallery.

Pioneer Spirit Day Brings Odd Promotional Effort
I have mentioned it before, but received an e-mail from Tom Perry at College Relations today regarding Pioneer Spirit Day:
Your moment…and your T-shirt… are at hand.
Pioneer Spirit Day is Friday, Aug. 28, and your chance to wear the Navy Blue and White to help Marietta College celebrate the kick-off to its 175th anniversary celebration is there for the taking.
What will you do? Will you wear the same old Hollister shirt or hoodie?
No, you won’t do that. Want to know why?
Because you’re a Pioneer through and through and you know this is your opportunity to join with 25,000 alumni around the world to observe a special day in the history of Marietta College.
Wear your Marietta College T-shirt on Friday, Aug. 28.
Need some inspiration? Follow Jason Sadler all day on iwearyourshirt.com and he’ll lead you across the Internet wearing his Marietta T-shirt…to Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and UStream.tv.
Join Jason and wear your Marietta College T-shirt.
You’ll do that because you’re a Pioneer…and you don’t want to be the one person in class wearing a hoodie!
~ Tom Perry, College Relations (Sent to all students via e-mail)
I Wear Your Shirt is a website where an organization pays a guy (according to the site, soon two guys) that will wear whatever shirt you send to him for a day that you purchase. Â He then blogs, Twitters, posts videos to UStream and YouTube, and posts images on Flickr of him wearing the shirt of the day. Â Usually he themes it around the shirt, like a cook book that bought one day led to him cooking on video using recipes from their cookbook. Â So who knows what MC will bring to his day.
At first I thought it was kind of odd, then realized that in today’s world of social media, this guy found a gold mine. Â I know I’m curious to see what he may have up his sleeve for Pioneer Pride Day.
But anyways, wear your Pio Pride this Friday, snap a picture, and put it on Facebook or send it to Tom Perry at College Relations

Marietta College Ties for 6th in the Midwest!
The US News and World Report: America’s Best Colleges list is finally out, and Marietta College tied for 6th place in the Baccalaureate Colleges – Midwest Region.
While it did not beat out all other OAC schools like in the Forbes Poll (Ohio Northern University was second to Taylor University), it did beat out #33 Wilmington College. Â No other OAC colleges were ranked. Â Marietta was tied for 6th with Cedarville University and Huntington University.
Marietta was also included on the list of schools with International students (9% of campus population), economic diversity (26% of students obtain Pell grants), diversity (index score of .13), and retention (73.2% freshmen retention).
Once again, another ranking of colleges, another great day to be a Pioneer!

New MC Website Brings New Direction
As in new content that will be updated throughout the year. The new Marietta College website will actually be somewhere that students will want to visit. Â The site launched with six feature articles, including the following:
- Events celebrating the 175th anniversary of Marietta College
- A letter from the Student Senate President, Kyle Thauvette
- A connection piece featuring the importance of resident life at MC
- Matriculation piece welcoming the class of 2013
- Feature article on Jim Tracy, manager of the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball
- Pioneer Pride day announcement asking all members of the Long Blue Line to take a picture of themselves in their favorite MC shirt
The idea seems to be to incorporate the past, present, and future all into one nice package. Â Visual appearance has improved greatly, with large images and prominently featured 175th anniversary logos. Â Content is more easily accessed and easily added/updated.
According to a press release from Tom Perry, the Director of College Relations, we should expect anywhere from 4-8 articles a month, which should keep things fresh and interesting.
As a side note, we have been recognized by the college as a local news outlet, which is a huge step for us. Â We will continue to provide a look at Marietta College from the student’s perspective. Â Writing on the Mall is still a student owned and operated blog…just expanding our readership and promoting our wears.
