98.5 Provides Diverse Listening Opportunities

It’s Tuesday night. Maybe you’re working on homework and need a little background music. Maybe you’re avoiding homework and need a distraction. Your iTunes playlist is overplayed and Pandora can’t seem to get your musical style just right. So what do you do? Perhaps turning to the good old radio is the way to go.

Senior Danette Curiale, of Cleveland, Ohio, and junior Alissa Bambarger, of Conneaut, Ohio, recently started broadcasting their own hip-hop radio show on Marietta College’s own WCMO 98.5 FM. The duo’s show, Hip Hop Hour to the Second Power, runs from 7-9 p.m. every Tuesday.

“We both like hip-hop a lot,” Curiale said, “We pick songs that are popular and that we like.” They are happy to take requests, both girls said, and they will play any suggestions they get, as long as they fit into the show’s genre.

Bambarger, who goes by “A-Bam” on the show, said her favorite aspect of doing the show is getting to play the kind of music she likes because there aren’t really stations around here that play it. “I never thought I’d have a radio show,” Curiale, better known as “D-Money,” said, “It’s different. That’s what I like.” Neither thinks having a show is very hard, the most difficult thing for both is finding edited versions of the songs they want to play. During the course of the show, they also have to break for campus and community announcements, as well as play public service announcements.

Curiale and Bambarger heard about an opening for a show through their sorority sister, Amy Hayes, who has had a show for the past two years. “We just had to e-mail the station manager and fill out some paperwork with a basic idea and timeslot. It was really simple,” Curiale commented. Now they grace the airwaves for your enjoyment on those boring Tuesday nights, so take a break and tune in.

Get Well Soon Dave St. Peter

Just a quick note.

I wanted to wish Dave St. Peter, the man behind the curtain at the McKinney Mass Media building a quick recovery and good health after he had to spend a day or two in the hospital. Without him, a lot of things wouldn’t go quite right, and I hope to see him the first day of classes. St. Peter also does high school sports coverage for WRRR is St. Mary’s, West Virginia.

Feel better Dave!

Radio and TV Guides are Up!

Need help finding out what radio and TV stations are in the area?  There are guides for that now!

Click here for the Area Radio Guide, your resource for AM and FM stations in the Marietta area.  Also, there is a list of the best stations to tune your iPod, XM, or Sirius transmitter to if you have one.

Click here for the Area TV Guide, which lists all of the channels that students receive at Marietta College.  I will update the list once back on campus to let you know which digital channels also exist (if you have a digital tuner).

Enjoy these guides and more, which are coming down the pipeline!

Mideast Region – Day 2

Games are underway in the Mideast Region today. With the rain gone, game one was played, showing us that the underdogs are here to play. Rose-Hulman beat Heidelberg 12-2. Wooster and Concordia (Ill.) are currently playing, and Marietta will play the home team, Adrian College, at 4PM.

Here’s the link if you’d like to listen to coverage of MC vs AC: http://pioneers.marietta.edu/onlinebroadcasts.html

Marietta College D3 Tournament Preview

After falling to Heidelberg in the OAC tournament, Marietta College received an at-large bid for the Division 3 Baseball Tournament.  This is the 34th time the Pioneers will be in the post-season in baseball.

Playing tonight at #4 Adrian College (Start time of 6:50 PM), the #3 Marietta Pioneers will begin the march into what is hopefully a long post-season.  While the Pioneers were unranked for most of the season nationally (they did finish with 10 votes, effectively making them the 35th best team in the nation), they finished with a ranking of 4th in the Mideast Region (but seeded third).  Comparitively, the other OAC team in the tournament (Heidelberg) was ranked #4 in the nation, #1 in the region.

Adrian College was not ranked nationally, but was ranked 6th in the Mideast Region (receiving a #4 seed for the tournament).

The Mideat Region plays in Adrian, Michigan this year, and like the rest of Division 3, features a Double-elimination format.

If Marietta wins tonight’s game, they will play Thursday at 7 PM against the winner of the Wooster/Concordia (Ill.) match-up.  If MC loses, they play at 3:30 PM tomorrow against the winner of the Heidelberg/Rose-Hulman match-up.  Past that, the tournament gets much more cloudy.  But I’ll keep you updated as the tournament progresses.

D3Baseball.com is looking at Heidelberg to advance, but sees Adrian as a possible upset special for the second year in a row.  Hopefully Marietta can put something together here in the post-season.

All Marietta College games can be heard tonight anywhere in the world thanks to an online stream off of the Marietta Athletics site.  There would be two streams if school was still in session, but oh well.
