Campus Parking Becomes A Problem
Maybe I shouldn’t say that it has become a problem, because some people will say that its always been a problem. Â But I digress.
Over the summer, the college decided to turn the entire Gathering Place parking lot into a a red lot, which is freshmen only. Â Prior to the change, the lot had been both blue and red, with blue being for upperclassmen. Â At the same time, the former Moose Lodge parking lot is now yellow (faculty) and blue. Â The change has made many upperclassmen as red as the freshmen lots.
This Facebook Group was started to raise the issue with fellow students and organize an Electronic Executive Carpet Bomb of sorts, by asking students to e-mail Rita Smith Kipp (the provost of Marietta College). Â The group wants to see the parking policies changed back to allow upperclassmen to park in the Gathering Place parking lot once again, and shift commuters and freshmen to the Moose Lodge lot. Â Here is a comment from the group.
This is ridiculous. Don’t most schools not even allow freshmen to bring their cars? And yet we are giving them more privileges? If anything, it should go the other way.
~ Katie Wolfe, MC Student
Student Senate has been notified of the problem, and I’m sure that it will be discussed at the first meeting of the year, which is this coming Wednesday. Â Writing on the Mall will be there to cover the meeting.
If anything, the one thing that shocks me the most from the group is the claim that a CPS officer told the group’s creator to “take a cab”. Â If true, something needs to be done about this mentality at CPS. Â Campus Police offers free escort services from any part of campus to wherever you need to go. Â It’s their job to provide that opportunity to students.
Is there a good way of fixing things this semester? Â Possibly. Â But the difficulty is that the parking passes are out and the spaces have been designated. Â Any changes may take as long as next year to see come to fruition. Â But better to work through Student Senate and e-mails with Rita Kipp about the issue so that the College knows that it is a problem than to let it sit idle and not have anything done about.

Fourth of July in Marietta
As our nation’s birthday approaches, here is a list of what those still in the ‘Etta can do this weekend.
July 3rd – 15th Annual Red, White, and Blues Festival – 6 to 10 PM – Music starts at 7 PM
Taking place at the Lafayette Hotel, there will be plenty of “blues, brews, and BBQ’s” to go around. $5 dollar admission to get in. Â Bring your own chairs, but not your own coolers, mmkay?
July 4th – 5th Annual Marietta Wing Thing – 6 to 9 PM
For those that enjoyed the Rockin’ Rib Fest that happens before Sternwheeler, this stands to be just as good (if not better). Â Also happening at the Lafayette Hotel parking lot, several local and out-of-town restaurants compete for several awards (and your taste buds). Â Admission is listed as being $10 on the Marietta Times website, or $5 plus cost of wing tickets on the Marietta CVB site. Â Also, there will be a wing-eating contest for those brave souls that want to tempt fate.
July 4th – Marietta Fireworks – 10 PM
Dodging all possible reason, you’ll have to head to the Washington County Fairgrounds to enjoy 4th of July fireworks. Â Why they arn’t having them at the levy, where the Wing Thing is basically happening, I don’t know. Â But if you want to see fireworks, it’ll cost you $5 for the “best seats to see the fireworks” in the Fairgrounds Grandstands.
P.S. Â For those of you in Akron, the Rib, White, and Blue festival is shaping up to be pretty good. Â There’s a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band in town tonight, and good ribs and food the rest of the weekend, leading up to the big fireworks show Saturday night. Â There may be a $5 admission fee sometime throughout the festival, so be ready for it.
