Panhellenic Council Supports Our Troops
The Marietta College Panhellenic Community helps support the troops deployed for Pro-Panhellenic Week.
As a part of Pro-Panhellenic Week, the women of the Panhellenic Council put on a philanthropy event. For the event they could make letters that are being sent to Ladies of Liberty. Everyone could also bring different products that will be sent over to the women troops deployed.
The philanthropy event was a part of the Panhellenic Council’s Pro-Panhellenic Week. The week was dedicated to uniting the women of the Greek community and to display the benefits of the council.
“I am very excited for everything that has been collected for the troops. We’ve been very excited for this week since the beginning of the semester and hope to do many more events like this.” Elizabeth Oswalt, President of Marietta College’s Panhellenic Council stated.
Ladies of Liberty is a national organization ,which Buckeye Blue Mothers is working with. Buckeye Blue Mothers is a non-profit organization that is made up of mothers whose sons or daughters are deployed overseas in the military. Their goal is to support their troops anyways possible, mostly by sending boxes of products that the soldiers need. For more information visit, http://buckeyebluestarmothers.org/index.htm.
“I felt that this was a good event to get the women of the community involved,” Sarah Griffin, Vice President of Community Development for Panhellenic Council, said, “It let’s them see that these items are going to women who are around the same age as many of us.”
Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the sororities at Marietta College. The community consists of Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega and Sigma Kappa.

Looking Back: Freshmen Greeks Have First MC Homecoming
Editor’s Note: Welcome Andie West, a Freshman here at Marietta College, to the Writing on the Mall writing crew. She will be periodically writing articles from the Freshmen perspective, among other things.
Marietta College Homecoming! A week filled with exciting activities, food, and chances for different organizations around campus to show their pride. The week is also an exciting time for freshmen, new to the experience. I had the opportunity to speak with seven freshmen on their first Marietta College homecoming experience. Here are their responses:
Patrick Tegge, a new member of Lambda Chi Alpha, says his homecoming back home is a big deal and was expecting as much from MC. To his surprise, MC did meet his expectations. On asked about his favorite experience he responded: “working on the float at 2:00 am and building a gate to the graveyard with Chuck Bonakoski!”
Pat and his brothers got to work with the local sorority, Omicron Chi Theta, on their float. He said that he was anxious at first since floats at home took 4 months to construct, but despite the lack of time and all of the activities associated with being a full-time college student, the float turned out to be well done. Tegge is very excited for next year’s homecoming.
Elisa Santiago, a new member of Omicron Chi Theta, expected the week to be a lot crazier than it was, but she was expecting to have a lot of fun and bond with her sisters. In addition to sisterly bonding, the Omicron Chi Theta’s experienced inter-Greek bonding with the Lambda Chi. Elisa said making the float with them was a lot of fun. “We forgot to open the windows (At the Lambda Chi house) so that was a headache with all the spray paint!” she said laughing. “Homecoming was a lot of fun and I can’t wait ‘til next year”!
Bryan Murray, a new member of Alpha Tau Omega, was expecting homecoming to be “kinda lame because (back home) cheerleaders and football players were the only ones who cared.” However, the MC homecoming “exceeded” his expectations. “I enjoyed it greatly and loved how much you could participate in and building the float was fun.” The croon was Bryan’s while Blake Alan Johnson jumped rope behind me!” Next year? “I’m excited especially now that I know what it’ll be like I can put more in it and get more out of it.”
Clay Ellenwood, a new member of Delta Tau Delta, figured it would be a pretty long, fun week and was looking forward to meeting a lot of new people. His favorite part of the week: “I think my favorite part was getting to compete in the Greek competition it was something I didn’t expect to be a part of”. Next year? “Definitely excited for next year for more opportunities to get involved and contribute since it’s not so new to me.”
I asked Alex Martin, a new member of Chi Omega, about her homecoming experience and she said it met her expectations. Her favorite part? “Can it be a tie?” she laughed. “There were so many good aspects it’s hard to pick out a favorite!” Her top two favorites were: The feeling of accomplishment after the cheer and her second was the announcement of fellow sister, Jen Kuhn, as queen. Next year? “I can’t wait!” She is excited to participate in more activities in the 2011 MC homecoming.
Mary Roberts, a new member of Alpha Xi Delta, was unsure what to expect from her new home’s homecoming. “I was pumped to do things with my sorority!” Her favorite activity? “Cheer! We are pumped for Greek week already!” Her impression? “A lot going on” but she enjoyed how everyone on campus was involved and showed pride in their organizations. Mary is excited for next year’s homecoming.
Kiki Cunningham, a new member of Sigma Kappa, knew homecoming was going to be fun. When asked if the week met her expectations she responded: “Yeah! It was a lot of fun and seeing how much pride everyone had for the school.” Her favorite? “The cheer and croon because I liked seeing what everyone came up with because everyone was so different.” Kiki is already excited for next year and uncovering the theme and how it’ll play through.
All in all, the freshmen experience of homecoming was positive and exceeded all their expectations. From the cheer and croon to amusing float stories, the MC 2010 homecoming is one to remember for our freshmen.

Paint A Kappa Today From 11 to 5
Sigma Kappa’s Ultraviolet Philanthropy effort kicks off today with their annual Paint A Kappa event. Donors can choose to either give $1, $2, or $5, and in return, will receive the opportunity to paint a Kappa. The event runs from 11 AM to 5 PM in front of Andrews Hall.
The Ultraviolet campaign donates money to four different philanthropies, which benefit gerontology, Alzheimer’s research, Inherit the Earth, and the Maine Sea Coast Mission.
For $1, you can paint a Kappa using a cup of paint. $2 scores a donor a balloon of paint to use on the Kappa of their choice, and $5 for a bucket of paint to pour on any Kappa.
Here are the times that Kappa’s are scheduled to be around. I’ve heard rumblings of representatives from other chapters also getting in on the fun, though, so stop by to find your favorite person.

The Power of a Wish
Ed’s Note: Chelsey Scott will be writing for Writing on the Mall, please give her a warm welcome. For full disclosure, Scott is a Chi Omega. Also, apologies for the delay in getting this article out. Things will be much more on time now, I promise.
If you had lunch or dinner in Gilman on Wednesday, September 1, you may have noticed lots of pies outside. And not the kind of pie you eat – the kind of pie you throw. At Chi Omegas, to be specific. This year’s first on-campus fundraiser was held by the women of Chi Omega in their annual Pie-A-Chi charity event, proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, their national philanthropy. After taking last year off from the event, Pie-A-Chi was brought back by popular demand this fall. And when I say popular, I mean popular. The event raised more money than it has in the last five years with a grand total of over $600! Not bad for four hours and thirteen tubs of whipped cream huh?
For those who may have missed the event, students who wished to pie one of the women paid either $3 for a throw or $5 for a smash in the face. Not only were the Chi Omegas the targets, special guest appearances were made by Delta Tau Delta’s Derek Ensinger, Alpha Tau Omega’s Drew Schulte, Sigma Kappa’s Amber Davis, (then) Rho Gammas Alex Edelbrock and Kasey Woodworth, and student body President, Josh Maxwell. The women of Chi Omega want to send a million thanks to these individuals for being such great sports to raise money for this fantastic cause! And another thanks to all the people who paid to pie a Chi – you helped share the power of a wish, the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation raises money to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. For more information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit www.wish.org.

Rock-A-Day: Paint a Kappa Today

Rock-A-Day: Recruitment Edition

Sorority Recruitment Kicks Off Today
Ed’s Note: Writing on the Mall Reached out to Panhellenic Council for an article regarding Sorority Recruitment. The following was written by Ally Janakis, the Vice President of Public Relations for PHC.
With the campus all a flurry and recruitment finally here, one cannot help but hear “Be More, Be Greek.” Although this does not literally mean Greek as in baklava and Greek gods, it is the world of sisterhood and philanthropy.
Every female student is given the opportunity to go through Recruitment at Marietta College. There are upperclassmen that disaffiliate from their chapter to help women through the recruitment process called Rho Gammas. Their job is to be unbiased and to answer questions and help women make the choice that is best for them.
There are three sororities on campus including Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega and Sigma Kappa. Recruitment for sororities will be held the week of September 6 through 10. Although Greek life is not for everyone, it is definitely an important aspect of college to try. As an incoming freshman, Greek life allows women to meet other freshmen women and also upperclassmen.
Recruitment for women involves different themed nights where potential new members are given an inside look at each sorority in hopes that they find one they feel they belong with. It begins with Monday and Tuesday being open houses and gives interested women a chance to visit each house.
Wednesday is chapter day. This is when each house explains what is unique to their chapter at Marietta College. Wednesday is also a chance for women to begin making a decision as to which house they feel most at home in.
Thursday night is a very special night for affiliated women and interested women. Thursday is Preference Night. This is when women are given an inside look at sisterhood and are invited to follow their heart to whichever house they liked the best. Following Preference Night women sign a card agreeing to accept a bid from whichever houses they write down. However, there is no obligation to join a sorority or fraternity if one chooses to go through Recruitment.
Friday is the final and most exciting day because the interested women receive their bids and are welcomed home into their respective houses. Most of the Greek community comes to witness Bid Day outside of Andrews Hall. Each sorority house is filled with excitement as they anxiously await their new girls and also to welcome their Rho Gammas back.
“Sorority life offers so much from lifelong friendships, leadership development, community service, social activities and more,” says Kelly Querry ’11, Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment. “The sorority life is a home away from home for many young women and it is a place to grow and mature.”
Although each house has its own character, they all have similar standards they must maintain. Every house has a required GPA that must be upheld, philanthropies they support by doing community service and raising money and some houses have study hours. Along with this, there is a lot of Greek involvement on campus. Greeks hold many leadership positions on campus including roles on many Executive Boards.
Each sorority has its own house with a housemother that serves as a live-in R.A.
Some of the benefits of Greek life include lifelong connections. Being a part of a national organization opens doors for employment and also provides alumni chapters all over the country that are there to help you if you move somewhere new. The idea is if you move someplace new you will have sisters there to take you to a dinner and tell you all the best places to go. Greek life also provides many chances to practice leadership. A good number of U.S. Presidents have been affiliated with fraternities.
“To incoming freshmen: at least try out Rush and Recruitment; some of our most involved Greek leaders on campus would tell you they never planned on going Greek when they came to Marietta College,” said Ryan Nolen’12 . “At least give it a try, you could end up with some of the greatest friendships and opportunities during your four year run here at Marietta.”
