Individuality on a Small Campus
In a society where globalization and innovation are the brainchildren of the future, expressing individuality is more pertinent than ever before. To thrive and survive does not mean being in a whirlwind of pedestrians and following their every move, though – it means standing out among that twister and creating one’s own turbulence, as well as choices and contentment.
At Marietta College, while not completely stated, individuality is highly espoused and expected to endure. Being a “cultural and intellectual leader in the Mid-Ohio Valley…†is one of the nine core values the institution has established, and having the ability to stand out among millions of others while competing for the same positions and benefits, is advantageous to anyone who has the confidence to do so. Being in college is an ideal opportunity to shape into who you want to be, but at the same time, it can cause tension and make this concept more difficult than what it should be. Pressures are inevitable in this surrounding, and it is students’ responsibilities to decide to cave into those or rise above and question or compete against the mainstream.

Marcolian Round-Up!
A new school year brings us a new Marcolian…or at least in paper form. Â The Marc website has not been updated to reflect the new stories.
If you’re looking for another helpful student media, the Marcolian is less of a newsy paper (usually runs every other week, but that may be changing) and more of a magazine. Â They cover big campus events, but tell more of the story than just telling you what happened. Â There are more editorials and opportunities for students to speak their mind and get their point across.
Headlines in this week’s Marcolian:
- Matriculation Ceremony takes place tonight
- Marietta College ranked 112th in Nation
- MC Students travel to Central America
- Planetarium community events scheduled for August, September
- Soccer coach expects greatness
- Football team prepares for season of growth
- Local Churches
- Student Discounts
- Fine Arts on Campus
- President welcomes Class of 2013
- Senior gives prospective on summer
- Del Mar’s Baja Grill disappoints
- Freshman offers fresh perspective
- Campus Organizations
- Cable Channel Guide
Writing on the Mall will be posting a few more guides now based off of a few of the Marc articles (Church Guide, Campus Organization Guide), but already has guides featuring the Cable Channel Listing (which was updated today to include digital channels for those with Digital Tuners), Area Concert Guide, and more.
And as a side note, Del Mar’s is really tasty (in my opinion) so I disagree with the Op/Ed saying that it lacks flavor and experience. Â They just opened, they’re still training and hiring. Â Cut them some slack. Â And I think its tasty and flavorful. Â But make your own opinion.
Pick up a copy of the Marcolian today to read all of the articles they have this week.

Student Health Insurance Reminder
Just a reminder that if you are not planning to take part in the college’s student health insurance program, head over to http://www.studentplanscenter.com/ before September 1st to have the $180 fee removed from your account. Â If you already have coverage for yourself or through your family, save some dough and let your scholarships go towards tuition, not fees. Â However, the program is a great option for those without health insurance or those looking for a cheaper plan.

Winter Term Thoughts
As Monday marks the first weekday of winter break, I figured I should share some musings of the loss of “J-Term”
Some of you may remember J-Term, a two week period where a student of the college could take a course in two weeks instead of an entire semester. It evolved into teachers leading course-based learning excursions, including tours of the local, national, and international realms. Trips overseas and cruises were the most popular trips.
Through what I can only see as a cost-cutting move, our break was shortened and J-Term removed. But really, I feel this is a benefit.
The last day of finals week is Friday, May 1st. This gives more time to students who either work all summer or take on an internship. The extra weeks can be critical financial and scholastic moves that aid in a student’s ability to continue to attend MC or move on and get a job. It also allows for less of a lull between semesters, which I’m fine with.
Honestly, I’m fine with the decision. The question will be whether J-Term is brought back next year or left off again. Personally, I’m for nixing it. I don’t mind less of a break in the winter. More summer is nice…more bearable to live in Northeast Ohio in the summer, not the winter. Brrrrr.

Student Discounts Abound Around Campus
As we get to the end of the semester, money is tighter than usual. Here’s a list of all the discounts that Marietta College students can take advantage of around the area. For more discounts, check out The Marcolian print version…usually some pretty nice coupons in there also.
