Concert Series Begins On Campus
Apparently the college has decided to hold a concert series in the newly-christened Kremer Amphitheater this summer. Â Here’s the scoop directly from college.
June 29, 2009 — Marietta College kicks off the Kremer Amphitheatre Concert Series on Wednesday with a two-hour concert by the talented rhythm and blues artist Dav “Fathead” Davis.
“We invite the students, staff, faculty, their families and the Marietta community to this free outdoor concert in our new amphitheatre,” said David Travis, Director of Student Activities & Greek Life at Marietta College. “We had Dav ’Fathead’ Davis perform for our Coffee House Series during the academic year and he was probably the best musician I’ve heard in years.”
The Offices of Residence Life and Student Activities & Greek Life sponsor the Kremer Amphitheatre Concert Series.Â
Davis, who sings and plays the electric piano, will be accompanied by his band. The seasoned performer has been entertaining for more than three decades.
The concert will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kremer Amphitheatre, which is located outside of the new Legacy Library. Travis said guests can bring blankets on which to sit and free sodas will be available to concert goers.
The second installment of the series features a performance by the Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Enchanted. That concert is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 29.
“We hope to draw enough of a crowd to these two concerts so we can expand the series next year to four performances,” Travis said.
Enchanted entertains throughout Ohio by playing a wide range of bands and singers from Evanescence to The Doobie Brothers and Pink to Journey. They are most known for their Fleetwood Mac tributes.Â
“Enchanted is also a very talented group of musicians and they really capture the sound of Fleetwood Mac,” Travis said.
In case of inclement weather for either performance, the concert venue will be changed to the Gathering Place, which is located on Marietta College’s campus at the corner of Butler and Seventh streets.

College Relations
It looks interesting, but it remains to be seen if the community will come, since the student body isn’t really around right now. Â But a good idea none-the-less. Â I’d like to see more things like this in the early Fall and late Spring.

Summer Opportunity: Fresh Air Fund
I just received an e-mail from the Fresh Air Fund, a group that works to provide free summer vacations to kids from New York City. They are looking for college students to work at their summer camp. Positions available range from being camp counselors to nurses. The camps will run from mid June through August 20th. It looks like it could be a great opportunity for those looking to work with children.
If you’re interested in applying, click here.
For more information, check out the press release they sent along in the e-mail

Winter Term Thoughts
As Monday marks the first weekday of winter break, I figured I should share some musings of the loss of “J-Term”
Some of you may remember J-Term, a two week period where a student of the college could take a course in two weeks instead of an entire semester. It evolved into teachers leading course-based learning excursions, including tours of the local, national, and international realms. Trips overseas and cruises were the most popular trips.
Through what I can only see as a cost-cutting move, our break was shortened and J-Term removed. But really, I feel this is a benefit.
The last day of finals week is Friday, May 1st. This gives more time to students who either work all summer or take on an internship. The extra weeks can be critical financial and scholastic moves that aid in a student’s ability to continue to attend MC or move on and get a job. It also allows for less of a lull between semesters, which I’m fine with.
Honestly, I’m fine with the decision. The question will be whether J-Term is brought back next year or left off again. Personally, I’m for nixing it. I don’t mind less of a break in the winter. More summer is nice…more bearable to live in Northeast Ohio in the summer, not the winter. Brrrrr.
