SAAC Wraps Up Pop Tab Collection With Final Weigh-In Friday

DSCF1088The Marietta College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will conclude its pop tab collection drive with a final weigh-in ceremony Friday, April 9 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Kremer Amphitheater, located in the center of campus. The collection drive, which has accumulated 42 pounds of aluminum pop tabs, will donate its final amount to the Ronald McDonald House Charities along with the other nine schools in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

For SAAC, an organization comprised of student-athletes, athletic trainers, dancers, and cheerleaders, the collection drive has provided another source of competition as each team is trying to collect the most pop-tabs. In fact, the local McDonald’s restaurants have agreed to donate one free large sandwich to each member of the winning team to provide some incentive.

And it doesn’t stop there. As stated earlier, this collection drive is also part of a larger, conference-wide collection competition as each school in the Ohio Athletic Conference is also vying to be the top pop-tab collector. The winner will be named

April 11 at the next all-OAC SAAC meeting. The school with the most pop tabs will receive a trophy to keep until next year’s competition.

For those interested in making their own pop tab donation, the main drop-off location is Wendy Thieman’s office in the Athletic Department located in the Dyson-Baudo Recreation Center on Marietta College’s campus. The weather location for this event is the Upper Gilman area of the Gilman Center, directly adjacent to Kremer Amphitheater.

BREAKING: Defaced Student Senate Candidate Posters Appear On Campus

As I walked through Upper Gilman today, I noticed that two posters for Student Senate Officer Candidates had been defaced.  Here are images of the two posters.

2010-04-05 13.32.26

2010-04-05 13.33.14

A poster for the Dave Hood campaign had been defaced by someone crossing off his name, then writing “Maxwell = Maximum Experience” and “By Voting Maxwell” in pencil.  Also, a poster for Sarah Campfield had been defaced, with somebody writing “But Her Grammar Doesn’t.”

Dave Hood and Josh Maxwell, both Juniors, are running for President of Student Senate, while Sarah Campfield is running against Chandler Wittel, the current Treasurer.

A poster for Josh Maxwell that was located in the same area had not been defaced.

The posters were removed immediately.

If you see any other defaced posters on campus, please let us know at Writing on the Mall by e-mailing patrick_h@writingonthemall.net.

Writing on the Mall has sent e-mails to Megan Moore, Judicial Chair of Student Senate, and the four candidates for their responses to the situation.  Stay tuned to Writing on the Mall for further news and the response of the affected candidates on the issue.

Career Center, Internships Help Find Your Passion

DSCF1164 As students, we all are striving for one common goal after our time at school: a job we’re passionate about. The path we take to get there however is different for everyone.

High grade point average, extracurricular activities, sports teams and clubs all enhance our appearance from an employer’s standpoint. There is a way you can set yourself apart from others though with how you spend your summers.

“A summer internship can give you the chance to really get involved with an area you are interested in, while it can also do wonders for your résumé,” Marietta College Career Center Internship coordinator Bill Fournier.

Opposed to flipping burgers, summer internships tasks vary from following professionals in the field, to working on projects with other interns. They can really open your eyes to your future and allow you to make decisions about what you want to do.

“I had an internship last year, and I learned so much about my field,” said sophomore John Lucore, who had an internship with Range Resources during last summer.  The geology major didn’t just make copies and fill coffee cups like many believe interns do.

“Every day I did something different. I followed people around that described everything they were doing. The internship really helped me understand the company as a whole, and it got me involved with my field early on. The pay wasn’t bad either,” said Lucore.

While Lucore might have got paid for his work, others might not be so lucky. Most of the internships for summer time, are for college credit only, and offer no, to very little pay.

“Some students might just go back to summer jobs because they fear that not making any money will hurt them in the wallet. In the long run though, the experiences you take away from a good internship will certainly be worth more than the money you would make in one summer,” said Fournier.

An internship also allows you to see what your interests are in the job market. The common perception is that, since I don’t know what I want to do as a career, I don’t know what internship to choose. However, a great internship can really assist your career path. The possibility is always open that you could find a hidden talent, or something you are really enjoy and in the process learn essential skills along the way.
After your successful summer of dedication and work, you will also have networked yourself with employers and belong to a very select in crowd. Performing well with your boss not only allows you to possibly obtain a job with that company in the future, but it also allows your supervisor to send your résumé and talk highly of you to other colleagues.

The Career Center has various tools to help you try and land a summer internship. On their website, which you can find from the department site on marietta.edu, there are tips for résumé building and sites with listing of internship openings. The Career Center, located on the top floor of the Gilman Student Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Flu Shots Available Next Wednesday From Noon to 4 PM

If you’re interested in getting a regular flu shot, now is the time.  Marietta College is offering flu shots in Upper Gilman from Noon until 4 PM next Wednesday.  Those of you under 18 can get the shot for $7, while everybody else pays $25.  You can have the shot charged to your account, but you could probably also pay by check if you so desire.

H1N1 “Swine” Flu shots will be available sometime in the next month, according to the college.  So keep watch on here for the latest.

All Aboard the Fail Train/EDIT: Writing on the Mall erroneously stated that flu shots were being given today.  That was a mistake on my part.  Flu shots are being offered next Wednesday, not today.

Consumerist: H1N1 "Swine" Flu Vaccination Approved

Good news for Marietta College students (and anybody else in our age range, really).

The H1N1 “Swine” Flu vaccination has been approved by the FDA for four companies to manufacture and distribute.

Our age range (18 to 24) is considered especially at risk for the “Swine” flu because we have not been exposed to a strain like this before.  Opposite of a typical flu, where the elderly are more susceptible, they are nearly immune to it.

It has been mentioned before that the college is bringing flu shots to Upper Gilman sometime in the next month, with “Swine” flu vaccinations on campus in late October or sometime in November.
