All students have their own opinion on what makes some classes more enjoyable than others; maybe it was easy, maybe it was interesting or maybe it challenged them and made them better.

The same is true for the professors of those classes. In my search for Marietta College students’ top five favorite professors, I found a variety of reasons why students like that certain professor.

Right away this was a challenge because the first 13 answers I received were all different professors which tells me something, we have great professors here at Marietta. Some push us, some make us laugh but they all care. In random order here are the top five Marietta College professors according to the students.

Dr. James O’Donnell has been a professor here at MC since 1969 and has won numerous awards for his research and publications. Dr. O, as he is known around campus by the students, got his Ph.D. in history from Duke University. Sophomore Trevor Halter was a supporter for Dr. O. “I had heard his class was tough but I always looked forward to his class. He knows so much it was fun to just sit and listen to him; I learned more in that class than any of my other classes combined.”

Dr. Robert McManus started at Marietta in 2005 but has already made an impression on the student body. He got his Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Regent University and teaches many leadership and communication classes. “Dr. McManus is very down to Earth,” says Senior Mike Washabaugh, “he has great relationships with the students and he doesn’t lecture, he encourages conversation.”

David Freeman is an Associate Professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department. He got is Masters in Petroleum Engineering from Oklahoma and has been teaching at MC since 1992. His office is in the Brown building room 202 but if you can’t find him there you can find him in the recreation center playing basketball with his students. “He is my favorite because he seems to genuinely care about his students succeeding,” says Junior Dave Koscielny, “anytime I need help he always takes time to help me out and make sure that understand it.”

Dr. Fred Voner got his Ph.D. from Miami University and is an Associate Professor of Geology here at Marietta. Dr. Voner started here in 1982 and Sophomore Josh Haun can’t get enough. “I only got to have him for Geology 101 but I wish I could have him for every class. He made me laugh everyday, and I guess I learned some stuff too.”

Wendy Bartlett got her Master of Science in Geology from Texas A&M University and began here at Marietta in 1999. Her style of teaching keeps kids on their heels according to Senior Katie Woolf, “I absolutely loved her class. You never knew what was going to come out of her mouth next. I wasn’t that interested in Geology but she made the class fun for me.”

No matter their teaching styles or how hard their classes are; all of these Professors have left a profound impression on the students of Marietta College.

EDITOR’S NOTE, REDUX:  The opinions shared in this article are those of Creasap and the students he surveyed.  It is nowhere near a scientific survey, so these results are not the end-all be-all of favorite professors at MC.  For a more thorough, but just as unscientific poll of professors at Marietta College, check out Rate My Professor.
